Perkins Coie’s Barak Cohen Edits ABA’s First Cannabis Law Treatise at Pivotal Growth Moment for Industry

WASHINGTON, D.C., (February 5, 2021)—Perkins Coie is pleased to announce that Barak Cohen, the firmwide chair of Perkins Coie's Cannabis Law industry group has edited the first American Bar Association treatise on cannabis law.

The new book, "Cannabis Law: A Primer on Federal and State Law Regarding Marijuana, Hemp, and CBD," includes insightful contributions from 27 Perkins Coie cannabis attorneys and three industry experts. It is published at a pivotal time for the growing $15 billion cannabis industry, which includes publicly traded corporations, emerging private companies, and startups.

"With more and more businesses investing in the cannabis industry, we wanted to provide a timely and accessible go-to guide on the federal and state laws governing the industry, which is heavily regulated across the nation," said Barak Cohen. "With legal sales of medical and adult-use marijuana projected to reach $30 billion in 2025, and a new Democratic-led Congress in Washington, D.C., our treatise addresses critical legal questions and challenges for leading cannabis companies as well as new entrants."

The book, which includes legal insights from industry authorities in the United States and Canada, is the first ABA treatise of its kind. Its publication follows the rapid growth of the cannabis industry in recent years in terms of commercial availability, range of products, revenues, and continuing legalization efforts at both the state and federal levels.

Perkins Coie's growing Cannabis Law industry group has significant experience advising companies in the marketplace, as well as companies that provide ancillary support to or invest in the industry. Group attorneys are located in major industry hubs, including Arizona, California, Colorado, Illinois, New York, Oregon, Washington, and Washington, D.C. Andrew Kline, the former public policy director for the cannabis industry at the National Cannabis Industry Association (NCIA), joined the practice in January.

Industry participants can purchase the treatise from the ABA website here.
