Perkins Coie’s Dallas Office and SMU Dedman School of Law to Co-Host Conference on Legal and Ethical Frameworks for AI in Medicine
DALLAS (February 22, 2022)—Perkins Coie's Dallas office is proud to partner with the Southern Methodist University (SMU) Dedman School of Law, the SMU Science and Technology Law Review, and the Tsai Center for Law, Science and Innovation for a conference on February 25, which will address the emerging legal and ethical frameworks for artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine.
The "Medicine + AI: The Emerging Legal and Ethical Frameworks of Artificial Intelligence in Medicine" conference will explore current and evolving trends in medical AI, including issues related to data privacy and algorithmic transparency. Speakers will discuss the various legal, ethical, and practical challenges to designing and developing AI and machine learning programs for medical use.
The following Perkins Coie attorneys will be speaking at the conference:
- Jill Louis, Dallas office managing partner and a partner in the firm's Corporate & Securities practice
Dean Harvey, co-chair of the Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning & Robotics industry group and member of the firm's Management Committee
David O. Taylor and Nathan Cortez will open the conference. David is the Robert G. Storey distinguished faculty fellow, director of the Tsai Center for Law, Science and Innovation, and a professor of law at the SMU Dedman School of Law. Nathan is the Gerald J. Ford research fellow and the inaugural Adelfa Botello Callejo endowed professor of law in leadership and Latino studies at the SMU Dedman School of Law.

- Dr. Teodor Grantcharov, professor of surgery at the University of Toronto, Keenan chair in surgery at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto, and inaugural director of the International Centre for Surgical Safety
- Dr. Steve Miff, president and CEO of the Parkland Center for Clinical Innovation
- Bakul Patel, chief digital health officer of global strategy and innovation, Center for Devices and Radiological Health, Food and Drug Administration
- Dr. Rosina Samadani, Oculogica CEO and board of advisors
- Dr. Uzma Samadani, Oculogica founder and scientific advisor
- Dr. Herbert Zeh III, faculty and chair of the department of surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center
Participants will also address barriers that confront clinicians, hospitals, and patients using AI, as well as the various frameworks, standards, and best practices that are emerging in the field and how these may evolve in the future. The conference will be both in person and virtual, and is open for registration here.
