Perkins Coie Celebrates 110 Years of Client Service
SEATTLE (May 3, 2022)—Perkins Coie is celebrating its 110-year anniversary this week, sustaining a commitment to a broad range of leading companies and innovative clients that has driven the firm's growth in recent decades as a strategic legal advisor to many of the world's preeminent brands.
Since its founding in Seattle in 1912, Perkins Coie has become a successful international law firm with revenue of over $1 billion and more than 2,500 attorneys and business professionals in offices across the United States and Asia. The firm has been recognized for 20 consecutive years by Fortune as one of America's "100 Best Companies to Work For®" and is committed to improving diversity, equity, and inclusion within the legal industry.
"Throughout our history, we have focused on building for the future by delivering excellent service to our clients, investing in our people, and embracing innovation and change," said Bill Malley, Perkins Coie's firmwide managing partner. "The same core values that have guided the firm since its founding have served us well during the COVID-19 pandemic and will remain our guideposts in the years ahead."
Perkins Coie LLP was founded with a handshake by former U.S. District Court Judge George Donworth and former U.S. Attorney Elmer Todd in Seattle on May 1, 1912. The firm has since evolved from serving an early group of Pacific Northwest-based clients, including Boeing and Puget Sound Energy, to representing a wide range of clients across industries—from startups and emerging companies to Fortune 500 corporations with global operations.
The firm's entrepreneurial culture and client focus has enabled it to serve leading technology companies and brands, including Amazon, Intel, Meta, and Microsoft, among many others. Perkins Coie has a premier Intellectual Property practice and was also one of the first law firms to start a blockchain practice in 2013—recognizing, before many others did, that new technologies would revolutionize consumer and financial services.
"As we celebrate our 110th anniversary, we remain focused on our long-term strategic growth goals and the strength and depth of our client service," said Katie O'Sullivan, Perkins Coie's executive committee chair. "We will also continue to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion by focusing on how we staff client teams and matters and through the promotion of diverse partnership classes."
Leading companies such as Microsoft and Weyerhaeuser, as well as the Minority Corporate Counsel Association and Diversity Lab, have recognized Perkins Coie for its commitment to improving diversity in the legal profession. In 2021, the firm launched a racial equality grant program to provide at least $2.5 million to groups focused on advancing racial equality through legal representation, policy advocacy, and community-based activities, in addition to also launching the Black Boardroom Initiative with critical support from Deloitte and other sponsors.
