Perkins Coie Appoints Bill Malley to Second Term as Firmwide Managing Partner Amid Continued Strategic Growth
SEATTLE (October 27, 2022)—Perkins Coie is pleased to announce that Bill Malley has been appointed to serve a second term as the firm's Managing Partner amid continued strategic growth that has seen Perkins Coie expand in key markets, including New York and Texas.
Malley's second four-year term will commence on July 1, 2023. He leads the firm's overall direction and has focused on growing the firm to meet the changing needs of clients, which include many world-leading companies and Fortune 500 corporations.
"I am honored to have my colleagues' continued trust and look forward to further expanding our capabilities for clients, promoting the talent and well-being of our people, and reinforcing our strong firm culture and community commitment," said Malley. "Since the firm's founding 110 years ago, we have stayed true to the pillars of client service, embracing innovation, and investing for the future that continue to serve us so well."
Malley has executed the firm's strategic plan and a series of notable investments that have contributed to record revenues surpassing $1 billion, growth in lawyer headcount, and the opening of a new Austin office to better serve technology industry and other clients. Malley also oversaw the firm's successful move to a fully remote, then hybrid, workplace amid the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Perkins Coie has continued a steady growth trajectory under Malley's leadership, from expanding in Texas to a doubling of the number of firm lawyers in New York and lateral additions across leading Chambers-ranked practices. The firm has been recognized for 20 consecutive years by Fortune as one of America's "100 Best Companies to Work For®".
Malley has also focused on achieving meaningful progress toward building a more diverse and inclusive culture, including among the firm's leadership. Perkins Coie's Executive Committee and Management Committee are both nearly 60% diverse, inclusive of women, people of color, and LGBTQ+. Leading companies such as Intel and Weyerhaeuser have also recognized the firm for the diversity of its client teams.
A signature component of Malley's leadership in the area of diversity is the firm's commitment to racial equality, a set of actions rolled out in 2020 following the murder of George Floyd that include a grant program, pro bono initiatives, civil rights legal fellowships, a supplier diversity program, and more.
Malley joined Perkins Coie in 2008 as a partner in the firm's Energy, Environment & Resources practice and served two terms as the office managing partner for Washington, D.C., prior to being elevated to his firmwide managing partner role in July of 2019.
In addition to chairing Perkins Coie's Management Committee, he is also a member of the firm's Executive Committee of senior leaders.
Malley grew up in Buffalo, New York, and earned his A.B., magna cum laude, from Harvard University. He received a M.Sc., with distinction from The London School of Economics and his J.D. from Yale Law School, where he served as co-editor-in-chief of the Yale Journal on Regulation. Following law school, he clerked for the Honorable José Cabranes, Chief Judge, U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut.
