Political Law Litigation
Defending and protecting voting rights.
Successful litigation surrounding voting rights, recounts, and election contests, whether on behalf of an individual or an entire party, requires the skill and insight of a seasoned legal team.
Our voting rights and election litigation practice, one of the oldest and most highly respected in the country, is distinct among law firms. We are actively engaged in some of the most consequential voting rights and election cases around the country. On behalf of national and state candidates, political parties, and political committees, we engage in litigation with the objective of removing barriers to voting and ensuring that all lawfully cast votes are counted.
Our lawyers have led post-election recount and election contest teams across the country for more than two decades, including in Washington (2004), Minnesota (2008 and 2010), Virginia (2012), Arizona (2014), North Carolina (2016), and Florida (2018). In 2020, our lawyers represented the Biden-Harris campaign in recounts and election contests in Georgia, Michigan, Wisconsin, Nevada, and Arizona. In addition, we have extensive experience in courts throughout the country litigating redistricting cases that determine the locations and composition of districts in the U.S. House of Representatives and state legislatures.
The cases we handle in these areas involve complex federal and state constitutional and statutory issues. We often litigate these cases on accelerated timetables against a backdrop of complex and ever-changing federal and state legislation and jurisprudence. Our deep understanding of this area of the law gives us a perspective made possible only through experience—we look beyond the “tried and true” to consider how litigation strategies and precedents fit into the greater whole of our representative democracy.
