Ben Desch advises clients on the development, protection, and commercialization of innovations, providing practical, business-focused solutions to help clients achieve their growth objectives. Ben has extensive experience drafting and prosecuting U.S. and international patent applications across a broad spectrum of technology sectors, including industrial and clean technologies, medical devices, and computer and internet technologies.
In the industrial and clean technology sectors, Ben has experience with nuclear reactor systems, high-purity coke compositions, power plant heat exchangers, data center thermal and electrical management systems, military-grade pyrotechnic compositions, electric motor technologies, LIDAR-enabled robotics, hydraulic pump systems, semiconductor processing and fabrication, and 3-D printing applications. In the medical device sector, his experience includes orthopedic imaging, virtual musculoskeletal modeling, surgical robotics, neurostimulation, and chemical and heat treatment systems. In the computer and internet technology sectors, his experience includes distributed ledger technologies, artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML), controller optimization, cybersecurity, and cryptography solutions.
Prior to his legal career, Ben served as a nuclear engineering watch officer in the U.S. Navy, where he managed maintenance teams responsible for a wide array of nuclear, thermal, clean technology, and chemical control systems. His responsibilities included analyzing daily radiochemistry and spectroscopy samples of primary coolant, overseeing oxygen and hydrogen generation equipment, maintaining carbon dioxide removal systems, and operating fire suppression systems. Ben also taught submarine nuclear radiochemistry for pressurized water reactors (PWRs) at a major naval training facility in Bangor, Washington.
