Babak's practice focuses on patent prosecution and counseling in technology areas including wireless technologies, cloud systems, optics, artificial intelligence, digital rights management, software, electronics and medical devices.

Dr. Babak Tehranchi is a partner with the firm's Intellectual Property practice. Babak also focuses on preparing and conducting post-grant proceedings before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office including inter partes review (IPR), post-grant review (PGR), covered business method (CBM) review and patent reexamination.

Babak has over 10 years of industry experience as a research scientist and engineer. Prior to law practice, Babak worked as a senior research scientist at Eastman Kodak R&D Laboratories, developing various optical, printing and digital cinema systems. Babak also worked as a senior staff engineer at Verance Corporation, a leading company in digital watermarking, and was a coinventor of a new watermarking system that became part of an industry-standard for audio visual content.

Technical areas in which Babak has extensive experience and knowledge include: image and video processing, optics and photonics, medical instrumentation and diagnosis systems, mechanical and electromechanical systems, wired and wireless communication systems, semiconductors, information security, data storage systems, and printing systems.

Patent Prosecution, Counseling and Post-Grant Review

University of Arizona

Draft and prosecute U.S. and International patents for the College of Optical Sciences in various optics and photonics-related areas including augmented reality/virtual reality (AR/VR), microscopy, polarization imaging, three-dimensional (3D) printing, laser systems, machine learning, and 3D imaging.

Verance Corporation

Draft and prosecute patents related to digital watermarking and content management technologies; provide strategic counseling in filing and prosecuting standards-related patents, as well as development of U.S. and foreign patent portfolios; conduct IP due diligence and competitive analysis.

Shenzhen Liown Electronics Company

Provide strategic counseling in development and growth of U.S. and foreign patent portfolios; draft and prosecute utility and design applications related to electronic and electromechanical lighting systems; conduct competitive analysis and pre-litigation due diligence.

Post-Grant Proceedings

Conducted more than 80 inter partes reviews (IPR), post-grant reviews (PGRs) and Covered Business Method Review (CBM) proceedings for clients such as Netflix, Hulu, Microsoft, Tyco, Lexmark, HTC, Netskope, and Liown Electronics. Participated in all substantive stages of the proceedings, including as the lead counsel, in drafting petitions, working with technical experts, taking and defending depositions, filing various motions, and making oral arguments in front of the Patent Trial and Appeals Board. Represented clients on both the petitioner and patent owner sides. Worked on numerous ex parte and inter partes reexaminations on behalf of various clients. 

Patent Portfolio Analysis and Acquisition

Wireless Patent Portfolios

Performed technical and legal due diligence of wireless patent portfolio, which resulted in acquisition of over 1000 patents and patent applications.

Multimedia Streaming Patent Portfolio

Represented our client in conducting patent due diligence and acquisition of multimedia streaming patent portfolio in a transaction worth over $100M.

IP Due Diligence

Conducted numerous patent portfolio evaluations, freedom to operate analyses, and patent validity and infringement analyses for technologies including cardiovascular arrhythmia diagnosis, robotic surgery instrumentations, blood glucose level monitoring, nuclear fusion technologies, Bluetooth communications, cellular phone technologies, digital rights management, fiber optics, projector systems, X-ray optics, interferometric optical sensors, elliptical encryption techniques, distributed computing systems, power management systems, and electronic circuits.
