Perkins Coie and Two Partners Recognized as Leaders in 2020 ITC Intelligence Report
SEATTLE (January 13, 2020) – Perkins Coie is pleased to announce that the firm and two partners were recognized as leaders in International Trade Commission (ITC) Section 337 litigation in Patexia, Inc.'s 2020 ITC Intelligence Report, a comprehensive report of ITC data and analysis of law firms and ITC lawyers over the last five years.
Perkins Coie received numerous top rankings for its ITC Section 337 practice out of 396 law firms that have been involved in Section 337 investigations in the last five years:
- #1 Best Performing ITC Law Firm for representing Complainants
- #8 Best Performing ITC Law Firm for representing Respondents
- #6 Best Performing ITC Law Firm Overall
- #9 Most Active ITC Law Firm for representing Respondents (#7 when local ITC counsel firms are excluded)
Kevin Patariu, a partner in the firm's Intellectual Property practice, was ranked #2 in the list of Best Performing ITC Attorneys Overall (Representing Complainants or Respondents), which considered the performance of more than 7,500 ITC lawyers who have been involved in Section 337 investigations in the last five years.
This is the first year Patexia, an IP analytics company, has released the report, which is based on data compiled from public information on 308 ITC cases filed under Section 337 between January 1, 2014 and December 1, 2019. Patexia analyzed all the attorneys, law firms, and companies involved in Section 337 ITC cases over this time period and ranked them based on performance and activity. Patexia's President and CEO, Pedram Sameni, explained the importance of the report, stating that "companies need to evaluate their counsel more carefully before hiring them as the outcome of their case, to a large extent, depends on their choice of counsel." According to Patexia, the attorneys named in the report represent the top one to two percentile in their respective categories.
"We are honored to receive this recognition of our ITC Section 337 practice," said Jim. "These rankings recognize our commitment to excellence for our complainant and respondent clients in high-stakes litigation at the ITC."
The ITC is an increasingly popular venue for intellectual property rights enforcement under Section 337 because of its fast pace and powerful available remedies. The ITC conducts Section 337 investigations and provides relief for intellectual property rights holders by barring the importation or sale after importation of goods that infringe upon a utility patent, design patent, trademark, or copyright, or goods that are made using misappropriated trade secrets.
Perkins Coie has one of the most active and successful ITC Section 337 practices in the country with a deep bench of tested, high-performing patent litigators who have represented both complainants and respondents.
