Perkins Coie Patent Litigation Team Secures Jury Trial Win in Texas for Super Lighting

A Perkins Coie Patent Litigation team led Jiaxing Super Lighting (Super Lighting) to a $14 million complete jury trial win in a three-patent case related to LED tube lamp technologies brought against its competitor CH Lighting in Judge Albright's court in the Western District of Texas.

The team obtained a verdict of liability on all three asserted patents, findings of willful infringement on all three patents, and the jury awarded the full damages amount requested by Super Lighting. Prior to trial, the team had forced defendants to stipulate to infringement on all but a handful of accused products, and the firm obtained evidentiary sanctions against the defendants. On the day before trial ended, mid-trial, the team won a motion for judgment as a matter of law on the validity of one of the asserted patents, something that almost never happens in the middle of trial. The jury deliberated for less than 2 hours before giving Super Lighting its complete victory.

This trial win, covered by Law360, signifies a huge feat in the busiest patent court in the country, and further establishes Perkins Coie's presence in the Texas and national patent litigation markets.

The trial team was led by Matthew C. Bernstein, and included Joseph P. Reid, Miguel J. Bombach, Evan S. Day, Abigail Gardner, and Harvey Chen, with invaluable assistance from Goldie Wilder, Patrick Kelly, Eric Trostad, Kyle Houston, Indy Fitzgerald, and Vickie Biernacke.
