Siting and Powering Data Centers on Federal Lands: Opportunities and Challenges

2025 Data Center Week

Siting and Powering Data Centers on Federal Lands: Opportunities and Challenges

Virtual Landscape

This CLE presentation explored siting and permitting for data centers on federal lands managed by the U.S. Department of Defense and U.S. Department of Energy, as well as opportunities to power that infrastructure with geothermal and other energy projects sited on U.S. Department of the Interior lands.

We examined leasing frameworks, regulatory challenges, and policies under the new administration that may affect these projects. Attendees gained key insights into agency-specific rules and legal considerations when evaluating potential locations for both types of infrastructure.
