W. Matthew Pierce
Building on his previous career in software, Matt focuses on patent infringement litigation and related matters.
Matt Pierce thrives on web, cloud, app, and thick software and other technologies such as video coding, wireless standards, GPS devices, semiconductors, and mechanical devices. He regularly practices in district courts in Texas, Delaware, California, and across the country, and has taken first pen on winning briefs at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
Matt’s advocacy for clients of all sizes has given him particular experience with standard essential patents (SEPs) and related fair, reasonable, and nondiscriminatory (FRAND) issues, both in litigation and in pre-litigation license demands. Matt has presented and written on multiple FRAND topics and leveraged his software background to develop FRAND-rate calculation tools for different technologies and clients. He also enjoys personal jurisdiction and service issues, especially those involving foreign companies.
Before moving into law, Matt earned a B.S. in computer science and worked for more than eight years in the industry, where he developed software for an e-commerce and logistics supplier. Prior to civil practice, Matt spent four years writing for judges as a clerk in Colorado’s appellate courts.
