Patrick Koncel

Patrick Koncel employs his extensive brand management and brand protection experience to provide his clients with business-focused and market-driven strategic advice regarding their domestic and international intellectual property (IP) portfolios.

He represents clients in a variety of industries that range from large multinational corporations to startups to small family companies. Patrick regularly counsels on a wide breadth of trademark issues, ranging from high-profile, high-impact trademark issues, to advising emerging companies on the trademark issues inherent in launching a company. He also helps established companies preserve and maximize the value of the trademark portfolio performance through regular maintenance and management.

Patrick routinely assists clients with trademark clearance, prosecution, enforcement, monitoring, and maintenance. He also provides trademark advice to corporate, diligence, and transactional teams. As counsel in adversarial matters in the United States and multijurisdictional disputes, he has prosecuted and defended numerous matters before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB). Patrick's practice also includes nonadversarial trademark issues, including negotiating and drafting contracts for the purchase and sale of trademark assets, trademark licenses and assignments, and other IP agreements for both domestic and international use.

Patrick has been recognized by Best Lawyers as "One To Watch" in 2023 and 2024. He currently serves on the Trademark Relations with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) Committee of the American Intellectual Property Lawyers Association, which regularly contributes to trademark policymaking at the federal legislative level, and during the USPTO rulemaking process, as well as preparing position papers and amicus briefs for submission in trademark cases. Patrick also maintains an active and ongoing pro-bono practice, providing resources to incarcerated gender nonconforming people through the Transgender Law Center, and preparing immigration forms for individuals in need of services through the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project.
