Ray is an associate in the firm’s intellectual property (IP) practice.

Dr. Ray Wu, a trained electrical engineer, focuses on patent prosecution and patent portfolio management. He advises clients on patent prosecution, patent litigation, post-grant proceedings, and IP licensing. Over the years, Ray has handled hundreds of U.S. and international patent applications.

Prior to joining Perkins Coie, Ray managed patent prosecution and licensing, IP portfolio management, and venture capital financing at a Silicon Valley AI startup. Before his legal career, Ray worked as an engineer on advanced lithographic technologies for fabricating semiconductor chips at one of the most reputable semiconductor companies in the world.

Ray earned his Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering from Purdue University, where his research was directed to high-repetition rate optical frequency combs and applications in radio-frequency photonic filtering and silicon photonics under the supervision of the late Professor Andrew M. Weiner. Additionally, he is a co-author of more than 30 academic presentations and publications, which have been cited over 1,200 times. Ray also holds an M.B.A. from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, where he majored in accounting and finance, and a J.D. from Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law. He completed his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, focusing on telecommunications.
