The Texas Data Protection and Security Act goes into effect on Monday, July 1, 2024. The Texas attorney general announced that his office has formed a task force to enforce the TDPSA, along with Texas’ several other data privacy laws.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau announced that it was issuing a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking regarding Personal Financial Data Rights on October 19, 2023. The proposed rule would implement section 1033 of the Consumer Financial Protection Act of 2010, which gives consumers the right to access their financial data and authorizes third parties to access it on their behalf.

In his prescient 1994 book, Copyright’s Highway, Professor Paul Goldstein of Stanford Law School popularized the term “the celestial jukebox” for his prediction of a future where consumers could stream on-demand over the Internet any music, film, TV show, or other entertainment work. Professor Goldstein’s foresight anticipated the rise of massive cloud streaming platforms like Facebook, Netflix, Spotify, and YouTube, well before their inception.
